Manufacturing process often involve work with metals which need to be process and shaped by various tools. The works with metals is often undertaken using high speed computerised machining tools. Oil and various metal working fluids are essential component of the manufacturing process. Exposure of employees to oil mist and metal working fluids (MWF) occurs during milling and machining, accessing internal parts of machinery, manual handling of work pieces and preparation and disposal of cooling liquids.

We will carry out a robust testing program to evaluate your employee's exposure not only to the most obvious contaminants such as oils and metalworking fluids but also to potentially hazardous additives and biological contaminants.

Our standard oil mist and metal working fluids assessment program involves:

  • Employees' exposure assessments to oil mist, MWF, bio-contaminants
  • Sump fluids checks
  • Dermal exposure check
  • Evaluation of existing engineering controls and the need for RPE

When cooling fluids are applied to the work piece to achieve the required lubrication rotation of the equipment causes formation of an Oil/MWF aerosol that can be inhaled by the machine operator. A variety of health effects can result from the exposure of machine operators to the additives present in water-mix MWFs and the chemical and biological contaminants produced by deterioration of the fluids during use. Most common effects are irritation of the upper respiratory tract, occupational asthma and a form of pulmonary fibrosis.

The inhalation hazards of MWF are caused by exposure to three agents: the neat or diluted MWF, microbial contaminants, and other chemical contaminants of the fluids.

Mineral oils, ethanolamine, diethanolamine, amine carboxylates, amine borates, tolytriazole salts, sulfonates, alkanolamides glycol ethers, phosphated compounds, biocides, triazines, oxazolidines, isothiazolones, alkanolamines and primary amino alcohols

Biological hazards

Endotoxins produced by gram-negative bacteria, Mycobacterium sp. Mycobacterium immunogenum, Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, Pseudomonas sp, Legionella sp.
